Holy Yoga EXPOSED!

Emergent Watch takes a close look at the  so-called Christian ministry of “Holy Yoga”. Holy Yoga has been around since 2005, and is the brainchild of Brooke Boon. This group came to our attention when it was discovered it was being brought into local churches in Orange County, CA. Since at least 2013, it has been a regular “ministry” at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church, and Mariner’s, Irvine.

Holy Yoga has recently shown they are teaching not simply yogic postures, but the breathing exercises known as Pranayama – which is designed to awaken occult Kundalini powers. Surveying the Holy Yoga podcasts on Soundcloud, it is also discovered that they are teaching guided meditations, “Breath Prayers”, Christianized Mantra meditation, as well as contemplative spirituality.

Although they claim to “100% Jesus and 100% Yoga” – The eastern occultic concepts integral to yogic practices – such as Chakras, Niyamas, etc. – are integrated into their teachings. Even the monistic spiritual concepts associated with chanting “OM”, are accepted as valid. These occultic concepts and the doctrines they are based upon are diametrically opposed to genuine biblical Christianity.

The following is a video expose’ of “Holy Yoga”:

As has been noted by many researchers – even the yoga poses themselves are connected with demonic “gods”. Yogic postures are not simply “stretching” exercises. As has been demonstrated, what is known as “Hatha Yoga” developed within and came out of the occult “left-handed” Tantric schools of Indian practices. Everything having to do with “yoga” is very dangerous, and can never be synthesized or Christianized.

NOTE: “The things Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God. I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons!” – 1 Corinthians 10:20-21

If you know someone involved in Yoga, or other New Age/ occultic practices, pray for them and pray for a way for you to reach out to them with the truth.

Brian Brodersen’s Creation Fest – Live ‘Teaching Event’ with Anglican Bishop

On Monday March 13, 2017 – Brian Brodersen’s Creation Fest posted on Twitter, announcing their upcoming live Facebook event, “Life Lessons from the Bible”. The event features the Anglican (Church of England) Bishop of Truro, Tim Thornton.  The post beckons, “Tune in and talk, text, tweet, AND *LEARN WITH @Bishop Truro and Steve Wild”. Thornton is also known as “Lord Spiritual”, and has been a member of the House of Lords since 2013.

Aside from from Brodersen’s open endorsement (on 4/14/2016) of Nicky Gumbel and his contemplative “Alpha” – this is his most brazen ecumenical move – even his boldest, since splitting from the CCA back in November. If anyone has any lingering doubts about Brodersen and the direction he intends to take his Calvary Chapel, they need to contemplate this.

As EmergentWatch has documented over the last 3 1/2 years, Brian Brodersen, via his Creation Fest – has been in a semi-hidden ecumenical partnership with many aberrant churches in the UK – particularly the Anglican Church of England. The COE and Rome recently solidified their partnership with a new “Common Declaration” between Pope Francis and Archbishop Justin Welby on Oct. 6, 2016.

This should be a huge red flag to the church of the state of the ongoing apostasy – That things are getting very late. How bad does Brodersen have to get- does he have to burn incense to Ba’al before people are alarmed? Christians are herein advised to mark Brodersen and his partners, and to separate themselves from this ecumenical apostasy.  He is most certainly in grave error and is now beyond accountability, and possibly beyond correction.

Calvary Costa Mesa’s Brian Brodersen, Hillsong and Bethel, Redding

Calvary Costa Mesa’s Brian Brodersen has openly endorsed Hillsong and it’s leader, Brian Houston – on KWVE’s “Pastor’s Perspective” program of December 3, 2015. Brodersen publicly certifies Hillsong as “Orthodox” in spite of their many well known aberrations – And even though less than a year later, Hillsong’s Houston was a featured speaker at the heretical, New Age, Bethel Redding’s “Open Heavens” conference of October 4, 2016. In light of these, and other events, it appears that the convergence of apostasy is rapidly accelerating. Now is the time to stand on God’s Word, and resist the global convergence.

Mark Batterson Reveals his New Age mystical influences

circle-maker-mark-batterson-heresy-occult-e1345934375933

More than a few discernment articles have been written, exposing Batterson’s occultic ideology – [see http://beginningandend.com/the-circle-maker-heresy-witchcraft-in-the-church/  but none has been as revealing as what the author revealed in 2006.

Mark Batterson – lead pastor of National Community Church in Washington DC, and Best-selling “Christian” author of the infamous “Circle Maker” book series – did an article back in august 2006, wherein he reveals who the authors who have influenced him. See http://web.archive.org/web/20061209190909/www.evotional.com/reading.htm

Among the books Batterson lists as “Recomended books” are:

The Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren; Sacred Pathways by Gary Thomas; The Power of Positive Prophecies by Laurie Beth Jones; The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho; The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield; Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins; The Vision and the Vow by Pete Greig [HTB & Alpha]; When Heaven Invades Earth by Bill Johnson; The Success Principles by Jack Canfield; Soul Tsunami by Leonard Sweet; A New Kind of Christian by Brian McLaren; Messy Spirituality by Michael Yaconelli; In the Name of Jesus by Henri Nouwen; Fresh Wind Fresh Fire by Jim Cymbala; The Divine Conspiracy by Dallas Willard; The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence; Practicing the Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle; Toward a Psychology of Being by Abraham Maslow

And, yes, Batterson is an advocate & active promoter of Contemplative mysticism.

Self-imposed Religion, Asceticism and Contemplative Mysticism

“Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words… Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ…

Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind… if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations… These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect (asceticism) of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh!” – Colossians 2:4-23

1-desert-dads1

The desert monastic communities that grew out of the informal gathering of hermit monks became the model for Christian monasticism. The eastern monastic tradition at Mt. Athos and the western Rule of St. Benedict both were strongly influenced by the traditions that began in the desert. All of the monastic revivals of the Middle Ages looked to the desert for inspiration and guidance. Much of Eastern Christian spirituality, including the Hesychast [Contemplative] movement, had its roots in the practices of the Desert Fathers.

“It was Anthony the Great who launched the movement that became the Desert Fathers… The solitude, austerity, and sacrifice of the desert was seen by Anthony as an alternative to martyrdom, which was formerly seen by many Christians as the highest form of sacrifice… They chose a life of extreme asceticism renouncing all the pleasures of the senses, rich food, baths, rest, and anything that made them comfortable. [See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_Fathers ]

Anthony the Great – (aka “Anthony of the Desert”) is revered as the “Father of All Monks“. According to his biographer, Anthony resided in an abandoned tomb in the Alexandrian desert. Having sealed himself in, he depended on villagers to bring him food. Anthony had numerous encounters with demonic spirits, even being physically attacked. Anthony tried hiding in a cave to escape the demons that plagued him. There were so many little demons in the cave though that Saint Anthony’s servant had to carry him out because [it was thought] they had beaten him to death. Anthony organized his disciples into a worshipful community and inspired similar withdrawn communities throughout Egypt and, the Greek and Roman world. [See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_the_Great ]

The contemplative “Prayer of the Heart“, or “Jesus Prayer.” can be traced back to the Desert Fathers. Interior “Stillness” (Hesychasm) (“stillness, silence”) originated with the Desert Fathers and was central to their practice of prayer, but wasn’t widely practiced until the fourteenth century.

2-hermit-encounter

Contemplative mysticism was spawned by Catholic monks, as they discovered the power of extreme austerities. Practices such as prolonged isolation (solitude) and other austerities, actually create an altered state of consciousness. In this altered state, one can enter the psychic realms, and thus susceptibility to direct demonic influence. These ascetic practices and their fruit IS IDENTICAL to what Eastern Hindu & Buddhist monks & Yogis practice. What is contacted by this divination is not of God, but of deceiving spirits!

In Indian religions, Some ascetics live as hermits relying on whatever food they can find in the forests, then sleep and meditate in caves; others travel from one holy site to another while sustaining their body by begging for food; yet others live in monasteries as monks or nuns. In the Mahayana [Buddhist] tradition, asceticism with esoteric and mystical meanings became an accepted practice . Practices include the extreme ascetic practices of eating only pine needles, resins, seeds and ultimately self-mummification. [See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asceticism]

The practices of Hindu Yogis, and their development of Kundalini forces, also generate what is called “Tapas”. Tapas is the “Heat” or “fire” that is created by the practices of yogis and other Hindu & Buddhist ascetics. The Hindu “Bible”, the Bhagavad Gita – although a work of the 5th century AD, re -addresses incorporates and actually synthesizes several different schools of Hinduism. The system of Yogic practices were adapted to the prevailing Brahmanical school of thought. The Gita itself warns against that the ascetic practices of the yogis – that they inherently cause development of powerful and dangerous occultic powers (siddhis).

3-sadu-kathmandu

“Tapas is described as the process that led to the spiritual birth of the Rsis, or sages of spiritual insights. The fire deity of Hinduism, Agni, is central to many Hindu rituals such as yajna and homa. Agni is considered an agent of heat, of sexual energy, of incubation…” This is where ascetic practices and kundalini and tapas are linked to the “sex magic” of Alister Crowley and others. [See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapas]

The Hindu Vedas are replete with tales of sages and yogis that attained “siddhis” or occultic powers, through the determined practices of asceticism. Siddhi powers include the classic psychic powers of astral projection, telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, psycho-kinesis. It is not insignificant that these siddhi powers are said to be granted by the various (demonic) Hindu gods.

Contemplative mysticism was birthed from the spiritual (demonic) encounters of cloistered monks in their ascetic rituals. Men who locked themselves in, in caves and even in tiny boxes, in an attempt to restrict or control the desires of the flesh, and to “still” the carnal mind. What may encountered in these practices are deceiving spirits, often appearing as “angels”. Many false doctrines been birthed by such demonic experiences.

angel-encounter

The fact that men went to extreme measures to “mortify the flesh” is a recognition of the sinful, fleshly human nature. But, rather than following God’s word, and “reckoning” or considering our sin nature as being crucified with Christ and being dead to sin – men have in their folly, tried every manner of overcoming the flesh by fleshly devices. This never works – for just as it seems one has overcome the flesh, it pops out again in subtler forms.

Here, God’s Word tells us, “These things have an appearance of wisdom”, but ultimately are of no value in overcoming the flesh.

Calvary Chapel and The Propaganda of the Phoenix Preacher

INTRO: Michael Newnham, AKA the “Phoenix Preacher”, has repeatedly made unfounded accusations against the Calvary Chapel Association – accusing them of engaging in “Propaganda”, etc. The facts are, it is Newnham & Co. that are the ones guilty of propaganda. Since 11/01/16, [the day after CC’s response to BB’s comments] the Phoenix Preacher blog has posted 17 articles on the CC split; NOTE: In contrast, how many posts has the CCA done regarding the split – Only 3! The 10/31 Initial response to BB’s critical comments @ the NWPC; The 11/10 “Letter to the Movement”, and the 11/29/16 “Letter to the Movement”;  They did however, repost the July 19, 2013 CCA letter.

The following is a chronological breakdown and analysis of the posts on the Phoenix Preacher blog, regarding the Calvary Chapel split, as of 12/18/16

12/13 – Phoenix Preacher [“PP” hereafter] soliciting Money – “Help Support” http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=21050

12/12 – “Things I think” http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27537– Opening line “The Calvary Chapel Association has waged a propaganda war against someone who was one of their own that make Goebbels proud. ..” and, “It has spread to the rank and file… This is demonic…”

12/07- Kevin’s Conversations – Gracious Division”  http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27509  This post praises the alleged collective wisdom of PP’s blog: “One of the unique things about this blog is the degree of theological diversity we have in our community. Certainly among our commenters and who knows how much more with our readers. Collectively, we have quite a range of opinion…” <>> Diverse? Anglican, Calvinist, Emergent & Contemplative – if this is “Diversity”, it is a bad joke.

12/06- “Spiritual McCarthyism” http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27475 – This is PP’s most despicable rant, wherein he vilifies BB’s critics and anyone who dares challenge his propaganda. McCarthyism, is defined herein as, “the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence… [and] tmaking unfair allegations or using unfair investigative techniques, especially in order to restrict dissent” This description, more than anything – precisely describes what PP &Co. are doing on his blog. Yet PP asserts, “The Calvary Chapel split has revealed that McCarthyism is alive and well in the church… [and is ] fueled by unsubstantiated accusations of theological treason put forth by some Calvary Chapel Association council members and spread like manure…

Quaint imagery, huh? Then Mr. PP launches into an extended apology for BB & his announced new policy. [See http://bereanresearch.org/calvary-chapel-women-pulpit/ ] regarding women teaching mixed, and his so-called “complementarianism”. Brodersen and his propagandists have tried to backtrack and play down what Brian announced on Oct. 22, 2016 in CCCM’s “Further thought on Women in Ministry” https://vimeo.com/185839779  Video “Things That Matter Episode 13 – Women in Ministry”; And see https://calvarychapel.com/resources/article/view/further-thoughts-on-women-in-ministry/

12/05- Repost of Dave Rolph’s pro-BB post  http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27492

12/05- “When a Movement becomes an Institution” – by Duane Arnold; See http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27477 (NOTE: Arnold is a contemplative promoting Anglican priest! > See my EW post of 11/20/16) So here, PP let’s Arnold post, and offer his theologically aberrant opinions of the CC split. Although he admits herein, “I’ve not set foot into a Calvary Chapel for close to thirty years.”; And that he’s never even met BB, still he rants on how CC’s have become “Institutional” and “formal”, and then he pulls out Lonnie Frisbee, exalting him as though he’s somehow the model of theological freedom CC’s need to follow, etc., etc.

12/01- “The CC split: Commentary” http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27452  – Here, PP  refers to the CCA as “Well heeled Tyrants fighting over territory.” and he feigns compassion as he tries to evoke emotions regarding the poor missionaries and other “caught in the middle”, who are “being fed online accusations and rumors that they have little ability to parse”. Stuff like his, “In any war, there are always victims considered “collateral damage”…”, etc., etc…

11/30- “Like Father in law, like son in law” http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27438 Another Brodersen promo – another vain attempt to compare BB with Pastor Chuck.

11/30- On his Facebook, PP reposts Sahah Mossman Wolfe’s post of New Age “Christian” Gary Thomas’ book, “Enough is enough”. Thomas is most well know for his creepy book, “Sacred Pathways”, where he promotes occultic type prayer and straight up Gnosticism.

                                                     pp-posts-gary-thomas-113016-copy-vert

11/29- “The CC Split: Update” http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27420 > In a shameless display of arrogance, PP herein revels in the fact that BB has all the CC assets (assets that were intended to be used by ALL the CCs). He says, “Brian Brodersen doesn’t have to answer to anyone, but his board and congregation, for how he uses the assets his father in law passed on to him. Whether you like it or not, CCCM is the home of Calvary Chapel…they own the trademarks to the name and logo and no smear campaign can change that.” Then, lastly, he defends BB’s cutting John Randall off of KWVE, saying, “the KWVE purge was not about Brodersen exacting wrath on his enemies.”

11/28- CCA Declares War On Brodersen http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27407    In response to CCA’s letter of 11/28, PP opens with, “This is the official notice of a split …and a declaration of open war instead of the passive aggressive back-stabbing that is the CC norm… again say that this is both a dishonest and duplicitous narrative that is being foisted upon the pastors and congregants of CC. We have said that it was a raw power grab on the part of the CCA… and this is the biggest grab of all!”, etc., etc…

11/17- More from the CC split http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27317  >> In response to the 11/16 CCA letter, PP, while offering no legitimate refutation to it, again hammers the lie that the CCA has no business license. Then PP asserts that the CCA, “They create doctrinal issues out of whole cloth to make him appear to be ’emergent’, ‘ecumenical’…”, etc., etc…

+11/16- PP again soliciting for money http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=21050

+11/15 – “Practicing the Presence of the church” by DH Arnold (Anglican Priest/ Catholic-friendly contemplative) http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27298>> See my EmergentWatch response @ https://emergentwatch.com/2016/11/20/the-phoenix-preacher-promotes-contemplative-prayer/

11/10- “CC split Widens”  http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27245  >> Slander of Don McClure & the CCA guys here! In responding to the 2nd CC letter, PP cites their words, “Before he went to be with Jesus, Pastor Chuck made it clear he wanted the Calvary Chapel movement to be lead by a collaboration of men working together.” – PP says, “”Now then, the opening statement is a lie. It’s past time to put an end to this charade.” then he defames CCA leaders Don McClure & Joe Focht, say they are “known together as “McFocht” . Then he adds, Here’s the hard, cold, reality for “McFocht & Friends” – Brodersen and Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa own the trademark “Calvary Chapel”, they own the dove, and they own all the conference facilities all over the globe. Should he so desire, he can send a cease and desist letter to the group (if it becomes legally incorporated again) which demands they stop using it all. Frankly, IT WOULD BE FITTING IF HE DID!”

11/07 – “Does the CCA Exist?”  http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27208 > Even though the CCA has a legitimate up-to-date business license in states other than California, PP propagates the lie that the CCA has no license to operate at at.

11/07- On his 11/07 post, PP responds very crudely to a gal who challenges his CC propaganda.

xpp-vert

11/06- “My Take on Brodersen Resignation” http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27190 Repost of BB’s resignation; PP says, “this is the most honest communication written by a Calvary Chapel leader in my memory… I applaud Brodersen for his honesty!” PP adds here “my guess is that the old guard will die with it’s aging leaders…but we shall see”.

11/03 – “Roasted Dove” http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27165 > Here PP praises himself with, “I hate to say I told you so…no, actually I’m reveling in both the fact that I told them so…” Then he says of the CCA guys, “This bunch did what they’ve always done…they got together with an agenda for power and then pretended that God endorsed the plan. It was an exercise in oligarchy and back-stabbing by men exhibiting the worst and most petty traits of self appointed leaders.”, etc., etc…

11/02- “Busting Brodersen Pt.2” http://michaelnewnham.com/?m=201611&paged=6     > This exposes PP anti-Chuck bias and is just more CCA bashing.

11/01-Busting Brodersen Pt.1″ http://michaelnewnham.com/?p=27140 > Here PP characterizes CCA motives in their 10/31 letter as “dishonest and wicked, but facts and virtue have never stood in the way of lust for power.” he ends here with, “The only real “unity” in the leadership of this group is the unity of the Philadelphia coalition to usurp Brian Brodersen from the movement altogether.” This hit-piece was released the day after the initial CCA letter of response to BB’s despicable comments.

********

So the reader may understand where PP & Co. are coming from – a further examination of the documentation will reveal that he and alot of his friends are Catholic contemplative promoting, emergent & ecumenical. Here are a few recent samples:

12/10- In his “Open Blogging” post here – PP’s buddy Duane (Contemplative) Arnold says, “Michael, Have you read “The Gospel and the Catholic Church” by Michael Ramsey? It’s a short book that I think you would very much enjoy.”; >> PP responds: “Duane, I haven’t, but I’ll fetch it for myself today.”

Arnold interjects: “I first met Bishop Michael on our honeymoon in the UK… he was my confessor/spiritual director for several years. A genuine godly man… “The Gospel and the Catholic Church” ties together the concept of the Body of Christ in terms of the Church itself, the ascended Christ and the Eucharist. Simple but profound… ” >> PP responds: “Duane, I just picked it up on my Kindle…thank you! I take book recommendations pretty seriously from folks like you…” A little further down, Arnold adds, “Ramsey was [Anglican] Archbishop of Canterbury… His relationship with the RC church was warm. Pope Paul VI gave him his bishop’s ring… He bequeathed it to the office in perpetuity…”

12/06 – His “Linkathon” links to the contemplative “Advent with St. John of the Cross” @ https://www.firstthings.com/web-exclusives/2016/12/advent-with-st-john-of-the-cross

pp-links

PP& D.Arnold-link-catcon

NOTE that PP’s 11/28 comments, apparently in response to my EW article -exposing his Catholic contemplative advocacy – contained NO PROOF of anything. As usual, PP considers his own word good as holy writ, as he says, “I have to laugh… This site [EmergentWatch.com] is full of nonsense that I’ve refuted…” Yet, WHERE is ANY legitimate refutation, any documentation? It doesn’t exist, because he hasn’t a shred.

pp-newham-claims refutes-EW-article

He has no real evidence of anything. Newnham’s claim to fame seems to be his secret un-name-able “inside” sources in CCCM. But factually, Mr. PP tries to foist his folly on his faithful followers, with nothing more than his word – and that being hearsay.

***

Newnham’s Blogroll

Lastly, as further evidence of PP’s spiritual inclinations, I point you to his BLOGROLL. One can also discern a fair amount about a person’s proclivities in a blog by their blogroll – their recommended blogs.

1] “Calvary Chapel Abuse” – which is an essentially an abusive site attacking CC & pastor Chuck amongst other things.

2] “Heavy for the Vintage”http://jasonstellman.com/2016/09/06/common-ground-catholicity-misfit-faith/ – This “explores spirituality as displayed by those whose lives are a mess… On his popular weekly podcast, Drunk Ex-Pastors, Jason and his agnostic co-host sit down over drinks and discuss everything from religion to pop culture… Jason stepped down from ministry to embark on a career as a writer, speaker, mentor, and really bad Catholic …”

PP linked heavy-vintage2

3] “Internetmonk”http://www.internetmonk.com/ ; A quick search of this site for “contemplative” shows us there are 110 tagged articles for this. including multiple posts on Thomas Merton, Brennen Manning & Julian of Norwich, etc.

And of course, now PP Newnham shamelessly promotes his “wisdom” and pithy saying in his book series entitled: “Make your own Application”, whose tagline is “You’ve read the blog, NOW GET THE BOOK”! Seriously – No thanks you!
