Dallas Theological Seminary Gone Contemplative?

The ministry of EmergentWatch began as a means to alert Christians to the infiltration of false teachings coming into the churches, under the radar of most – coming into the bookstores right in their local churches. EW published a number of bookstore surveys, searching for materials by known false teachers. After being exposed, two churches surveyed slapped a copyright violation claim against two of EW’s video presentations, exposing Calvary Chapel of Downey and Rick Warren’s Saddleback church. Both videos were subsequently removed.

Two Christian Seminaries were also examined in late 2013. Fuller Theological (With predictably bad results; See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCbS3Mwo07A), and Dallas Theological. The latter returned some alarming results, as it is widely know as a bastion of conservative Christianity.

A recent article by Lighthouse Trails explains:

“Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) has always maintained that while they teach Spiritual Formation, they only teach the “good” kind and that they are not a school that promotes contemplative spirituality. Lighthouse Trails has always challenged these suppositions. In fact, it wasn’t that long ago when Lighthouse Trails editors had some correspondence with two different DTS faculty members (one a dean) who insisted that DTS was not promoting contemplative spirituality…”

See the complete article here: http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/blog/?p=23055

EmergentWatch did a Bookstore survey of the DTS online bookstore in November 2013, and published the results, showing hundreds of books and tapes by many known false teachers. Another survey was done on 7/21-22/2017, and shows that rather than the problem being corrected, it has gotten worse – and now includes authors such as Leonard Sweet, Henri Nouwen, Tony Campolo, Phyliss Tickle and other recognized heretical teachers. The bookstore survey is now in jpeg format.

The above results are of only a partial, and not a comprehensive survey – Yet, it certainly does appear that DTS, like so many other Christian institutions now, has been overrun with the spirit of this age.

The Wild Goose Festival: Contemplative Meets Queer Theology

Held annually, the Wild Goose Festival is said to be “focused on justice, spirituality, music and the arts… (and) rooted in the Christian tradition” and is popular among progressive Christians and many involved with the emerging church movement. It is the only Christian music festival in the U.S. that caters to “theological liberals”…

Wild Goose Fest 2017 also prominently featured Shack author William Paul Young and the contemplatives Richard Rohr, Phyllis Ticlke and Tony Campolo, along with new age speakers like Mirabai Starr, and others. Their website is here: http://wildgoosefestival.org/

The following video is edited from some of the Wild Goose promo vids. http://

The Wild Goose Festival is affiliated with the aberrant group “Convergence“. Convergence is the brain child of ultra-liberal emergent apostate Brian McLaren. McLaren, the author of “A New Kind of Christian” – led the ceremony for his son’s same-sex wedding in 2012. [see http://apprising.org/2012/09/24/brian-mclaren-leads-ceremony-at-sons-same-sex-wedding/].

The Convergence charter informs us: “We believe in Jesus and the good news of the reign, commonwealth, or ecosystem of God… We seek to honor, interpret, and apply the Bible in fresh and healing ways, aware of the damaging ways the Bible has been used in the past… We seek the common good, locally and globally, through churches of many diverse forms… We build inclusive partnerships across gaps between the powerful and vulnerable – including disparities based on wealth, gender, race and ethnic identity, education, religion, and sexuality …”

In an 2006 interview with Lief Hansen, McLaren stated: “The doctrine of hell basically says…At the end, God gets his way through coercion, violence, intimidation and domination – just like every other kingdom. The cross isn’t the center then – the cross is almost a distraction and false advertising for God.”

Priscilla Shirer & Mark Batterson Reveal Their Contemplative Affinities

For those who are not aware, Alpha (originally the ‘Alpha Course’) is contemplative at it’s core, and was created and developed by the heretical Holy Trinity Brompton [HTB] – the home of the European wave of the aberrant ‘Holy Laughter Revival’. Nicky Gumbel is HTB’s leader, and face of Alpha. Video used in this post is from the 2017 Alpha Leadership Conference [LC17].

EmergentWatch and Friends Falsely Accused of “Slander”

This article is written in response to the unwarranted attack upon my friend Eric Stuckey, by Holland Davis [Calvary Chapel San Clemente] in his FB article posted 6/2/2017, entitled: “EMERGENT WATCH OR EMERGENT SLANDER?See: https://www.facebook.com/hollanddavis/posts/10212281628851463

First of all, Eric Stuckey is not the owner of the EmergentWatch blog, nor did he write the article exposing the “Pastors Together” group. Eric only posted or “shared” it on his Facebook timeline. Eric is most certainly not guilty of anything, particularly regarding the EW blog. He is now being falsely accused by Davis for “slander” and for allegedly lying.

Eric had only been involved initially with my EW blog, and wrote two articles, none of which criticized anyone. He has not been involved, or written anything since then – over 3 years ago. Eric wrote only two articles for the EW blog, in the first months of it’s creation.

1- “Noting the Dividers and Offenders“, on 11/16/2013, wherein he shows the biblical precedents for naming names of those involved in false teachings. 2- “Biblical Outreaches” of 12/17/2013. Neither of these articles had anything to do with Holland Davis or the PT group.

I have stated publicly on several occasions on my Facebook page that I -Mark Jefferies – am the writer of the posts on EmergentWatch, and the creator of the related videos on You Tube, under the screen name 4Philemon.

It was after careful research that the “Pastors Together“, of 1/24/2016 post was posted. It was based on publicly available screen captured evidence which is now a matter of public record. I posted 2 posts in early 2016 on Holland Davis and the PT group: 1- 1/24/2016 – https://emergentwatch.com/2016/01/24/pastors-together-a-fellowship-of-errors/

2- The EW post of 3/26/2016 on HD & his “Pastors Together” group was simply a posting of my You Tube video, “Pastors Together – Together in Ecumenical Apostasy“. https://emergentwatch.com/2016/03/26/pastors-together-together-in-ecumenical-apostasy/

I did not personally slander Holland. I did surmise from the available data, that Holland “appeared to be” the leader of the PT group, as he is the one actively promoting it on social media. I also did point out his reposting of an IHOP post that was highly questionable, and this post has since been removed from his page.

I stand behind my research in these posts. It is a matter of historical record, as the screen captured documentation remains valid. How screen captured documentation can be interpreted as “slander” is beyond me.

Although the PT group page has removed the “What we Believe” page – that linked them to the ecumenical Lausanne Covenant has been removed, it appears that all of the same churches that were involved at the time I wrote the blog piece are still currently involved.

Rather than be accountable to the public for their actions and statements, some here have misused Matt. 18, in an attempt to intimidate believers into silence. This is an abuse of pastoral authority, and disingenuous to say the least.

PS: Note that some of the people in positions of power, whose unbiblical activities have been exposed by EmergentWatch are apparently now feeling threatened enough that they will resort to these false accusations; Even enlisting the help of as many supporters as they can, in an attempt to discredit and silence EmergentWatch – so they can continue their activities without fear of exposure. Again, the documentation on this blog speaks for itself.

Calvary Chapel – On the Road to Rome?

Brodersen’s Creation Fest FB page posted one last invitation on the morning of the Thy Kingdom Come ecumenical event, inviting people to worship at the “prayer stations” and to “Taize Reflection…

One brave lady posted on the Truro Cathedral FB page: “This is extremely worrying. Contemplative prayer is a mystical practice, and not one Christians should be involved in at all. Please do your own research”.

The COE’s Truro dismissively responds: ” (This) event has been requested by the archbishops of Canterbury and York, with the purpose of stimulating and promoting prayer, and thus deepen people’s relationship with God. Like people, prayer comes in many forms…”

Taking a closer look at one of the players involved: As mentioned previously, Brian Brodersen’s Creation fest hosted the COE’s Tim Thornton, Bishop of Truro, in a live teaching event on social media. It is also Thornton’s church, Truro Cathedral where the contemplative event, Thy Kingdom Come [TKC] event was held yesterday, sponsored by BB’s Creation Fest. See https://emergentwatch.com/2017/05/17/brian-brodersens-creation-fest-hosting-major-contemplative-event/

It is not without significance that Bishop Thornton also happens to be one of the two men chosen to represent the UK in the ongoing “Anglican – Roman Catholic Dialogue“. The representatives were specially commissioned by Pope Francis and Archbishop Justin Welby – “to promote growth in communion between these two churches”. See https://iarccum.org/bishop-pairs/

It appears that Thornton is no ordinary Anglican priest. As his Twitter page shows, he was “Commissioned” for this ecumenical work in October 2016 – as he says, “as Bishops walking together *FOR unity“. The fingerprints of the Vatican seem to be all over these things.

Brian Brodersen Now Promoting Contemplative Mysticism

Calvary Costa Mesa’s Brian Brodersen – via his Creation Fest – appears to be working in an active, continual partnership with the Church of England. On their Social media pages, CFest has had LIVE Q&A sessions with Tim Thornton – [COE] Bishop of Truro [Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary]; And, on April 26th, CFest posted “The Official Common Worship App” from the Church of England, for anyone to download. Bishop Thornton has also been a frequent speaker at various CFest events.

The CFest 2017 will feature contemplative advocate Kay Arthur. See: http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/blog/?p=11053 And also: http://apprising.org/2014/07/05/kay-arthur-with-erroneous-contemplative-interpretation-of-psalm-4610/

The Big news is that Brian Brodersen’s CFest is now an active participant & promoter of the COE’s “Thy Kingdom Come” [TKC] ecumenical prayer event, to be held at the Truro Cathedral, May 28th, 2017 – and “Hosted by Creation Fest UK“. Their Facebook post of May 10th states: “JOIN US in prayer with an afternoon of events at the majestic Truro Cathedral as part of the global Thy Kingdom Come prayer initiative.”

The COE’s Truro Cathedral FB page post of May 10, 2017 specifically identifies the Thy Kingdom Come event to be held there on May 28, as “Creation Fest UK’s event“. [See links & screen captures]

Truro Cathedral’s FB page events post declares: “Join the worldwide initiative to pray – http://www.thykingdomcome.global in partnership with the Diocese of Truro, Churches Together in Cornwall and Creation Fest“.

See:  https://www.facebook.com/events/637597366438107/?acontext={“action_history”:”[{\”surface\”:\”page\”,\”mechanism\”:\”page_upcoming_events_card\”,\”extra_data\”:[]}]”,”has_source”:true}

The TKC events are billed as a series of “Prayer” events, but are thoroughly contemplative. Included in the TKC materials are instructions for activities for individuals, families, churches and children, that include, amongst other things:

  • Lectio Divina
  • Labyrinth walking
  • Prayer Stations
  • Breath Prayers
  • Sitting in silence for extended periods
  • Taize Worship (w/ candles & music)
  • Symbolic (ritualistic) body movements, hand signs etc. – called “Prayer Games

Also, many of these practices are combined and executed together. Then, there are many “activities” designed for children, specifically to engage their senses and activate their imagination. Teaching them God’s Word does not seem to be one of these activities.

NOTE that most of these activities are designed to put one into an altered state of consciousness. It is well known that altered states render one susceptible to occultic spiritual (demonic) influences. These forces can subtly influence one towards anti-biblical beliefs and into further occultic practices.

The TKC “Facilitator’s Guidebook” indicates it was written by the contemplative monks of the Society of St. John the Evangelist [SSJE.org] These monks host regular contemplative retreats at their facilities. See https://www.thykingdomcome.global/resources/102

One of the handouts – “Praying the 11 prayers of Thy Kingdom Come” – Like the schedule for the daily prayers that end in Taize contemplation, so the prayers of Thy Kingdom Come end with:

[9:] “Celebration” – using the occultic statement: “Everything and everyone we meet is sacred and charged with God’s Glory” [10:] “Silence – contemplation“; [11:] Saying “I do this in God’s name“…

To summarize: Note that Brian Brodersen, as the Executive Director of the Creation Fest UK – is directly responsible for it’s activities. It has been demonstrated that the Thy Kingdom Come activities are based on contemplative, consciousness altering practices. Brodersen’s CFest FB page shows us CFest is hosting the event, and the COE’s Truro Cathedral FB page states that the May 28th event is “Creation Fest UK’s event”. For Brodersen and company to try to deny or claim ignorance of the contemplative factors being promoted here would be useless. BB is not simply reposting or liking posts by known contemplatives – He is now, himself now an active promoter of contemplative mysticism.

[NOTE: The links herein may be deleted by BB and co. after this article appears. This is why screen captured documentation is important.]

Also – All of documentation/ screen captures are now available for enlarged viewing on a separate page @  https://emergentwatch.com/documentation/

Holy Yoga EXPOSED!

Emergent Watch takes a close look at the  so-called Christian ministry of “Holy Yoga”. Holy Yoga has been around since 2005, and is the brainchild of Brooke Boon. This group came to our attention when it was discovered it was being brought into local churches in Orange County, CA. Since at least 2013, it has been a regular “ministry” at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church, and Mariner’s, Irvine.

Holy Yoga has recently shown they are teaching not simply yogic postures, but the breathing exercises known as Pranayama – which is designed to awaken occult Kundalini powers. Surveying the Holy Yoga podcasts on Soundcloud, it is also discovered that they are teaching guided meditations, “Breath Prayers”, Christianized Mantra meditation, as well as contemplative spirituality.

Although they claim to “100% Jesus and 100% Yoga” – The eastern occultic concepts integral to yogic practices – such as Chakras, Niyamas, etc. – are integrated into their teachings. Even the monistic spiritual concepts associated with chanting “OM”, are accepted as valid. These occultic concepts and the doctrines they are based upon are diametrically opposed to genuine biblical Christianity.

The following is a video expose’ of “Holy Yoga”:

As has been noted by many researchers – even the yoga poses themselves are connected with demonic “gods”. Yogic postures are not simply “stretching” exercises. As has been demonstrated, what is known as “Hatha Yoga” developed within and came out of the occult “left-handed” Tantric schools of Indian practices. Everything having to do with “yoga” is very dangerous, and can never be synthesized or Christianized.

NOTE: “The things Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God. I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons!” – 1 Corinthians 10:20-21

If you know someone involved in Yoga, or other New Age/ occultic practices, pray for them and pray for a way for you to reach out to them with the truth.
